What is a reason to pause an offer?

A quick yes can feel reassuring. Before committing, look at what the offer leaves out. Can you name the person who will treat you, the product, and the pharmacy? Can someone answer a question about each?

The assumption

A “research use only” label makes an offer for treatment acceptable.

What the answer rests on

“Research use only” presents a product as meant for laboratory work, not for people to take. As of September 2026, FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, says that wording does not excuse an offer intended to treat people. In warning letters, FDA pointed to treatment claims and water sold to mix products for injection as evidence that sellers intended people to use them.

Signs of an unreliable seller

Some gaps have a direct answer

FDA means the Food and Drug Administration. Federal law as of September 2026 prohibits supplying a prescription medicine without a valid prescription.

As of September 2026, calling a compounded drug FDA-approved is false. Compounded drugs are made to order and do not have FDA product approval.

FDA’s checklist also flags the lack of a licensed doctor to answer questions after delivery, packaging damage, and false details about a pharmacy.

The agency has found fraudulent compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide bearing the names of pharmacies that do not exist, or that did not make the products.

Where Illinois hears concerns

Chicago concerns have public routes

In its January 2025 alert, the Illinois Attorney General flagged misleading weight medicine ads, research-only products, and requests to misstate weight. Its comments about shortages describe January 2025, before the shortages ended. Use the alert’s signs of misleading advertising, but check the current rules for copies on the made-to-order drugs page.

IDFPR, Illinois’s Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, takes complaints about the professionals and pharmacies it regulates.

The Illinois Attorney General takes complaints about deception. Its Health Care Bureau can help with billing, coverage disputes, and misleading health ads; it cannot be a person’s private lawyer.

Keep the wording of the offer, the product name, and the payment record together. They give you concrete details to include when describing a concern.

Separate the offer from its proof

Which part of this offer can I verify, and which part is still just a claim?
