Costs Questions My notes

A guide to finding care · Chicago, Illinois

What do I want answered at the visit?

Begin with the part you find hardest to say. Is it the cost, the treatment claim, or the thought of asking for more time? Write that question down and bring it with you.

The assumption

I need to choose a medicine before asking for an assessment.

What the answer rests on

The Federation of State Medical Boards, whose members are boards overseeing doctors, says a choice from a treatment menu cannot serve as a proper assessment by itself. Its guidance says patients must be able to raise follow-up questions of their choosing.

Your side of the assessment

Start with the goal in your own words

Describe what you want help with, what has changed, and what you have already tried. Bring a list naming each medicine and supplement you use. A short list is enough to begin the conversation.

Ask the person who will treat you, such as a doctor, what they need to know before discussing treatment. If a proposed plan is unclear, ask them to explain it without using the product’s sales wording.

The short version

A question map to bring along

Part of the discussion

A question in plain words

My goal

What are we treating, and how will we judge progress?

The product

What is its name, and is it a tablet or an injection?

Other choices

What else could address this problem?

The evidence

What is known about this product for my goal?

Possible problems

What can go wrong with this specific medicine?

The pharmacy

Who fills it, and how do I check that pharmacy?

The bill

What is included now and at the next refill?

After the visit

Who answers my questions and reviews how I am doing?

Leaving treatment choices open

Ask until the terms make sense

If a word is unclear, ask for its meaning and why it matters to your situation. You can ask for the product name and plan in writing. Keep unanswered questions beside the answers.

This guidance is advice for state boards that oversee doctors, not a law for every state. In Illinois, as of September 2026, remote care has to meet the standard for a visit in person.

An assessment can leave a choice open. Ask what information would help decide it, and what the cost is while that question remains open.

Carry the unresolved treatment question

What do we still need to know before deciding on a plan?
