A guide to finding care · Chicago, Illinois

What does being in Chicago change?

Would you rather talk in a room or from home? Either way, start by asking who will assess you. A city name in a web address does not answer that question.

The assumption

A Chicago-looking website settles the local part.

What the answer rests on

Telehealth means care from a distance, such as a phone or video call, or sending records for later review. As of September 2026, a person giving this care to a patient in Illinois needs an Illinois licence or state permission to practise. Certain temporary permits allow this under an agreement with a sponsoring organisation.

Your end of the call

Begin with where you will be

For a remote visit, say where you will physically sit. If plans change, tell the service before the visit. Ask it to confirm that the person assessing you can give care there. If they have a temporary permit instead of a licence, ask for its number and the sponsoring organisation’s name. Ask Illinois’s licensing agency to check those details before paying.

As of September 2026, Illinois holds remote care to the same standard as a visit in a room. A screen does not expand the work the person treating you is allowed to do.

Ask how a needed examination or test would be arranged. Distance is part of the planning conversation, not a reason to skip it.

The short version

Choose a route, then ask the same core questions

Care route

What to ask before paying

An in-person medical practice

Who does the assessment? Can I discuss other options?

A licensed remote service

Who will treat me? How do I check their Illinois licence or permit?

A medical spa: a business combining spa services with medical treatments

Who gives the medical care and oversees work done by others?

The Illinois permission trail

The checks reach beyond the visit

Illinois licence records sit with the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, known as IDFPR. It licenses doctors and handles action over misconduct; the State Medical Board advises it.

As of September 2026, a pharmacy outside Illinois needs an Illinois nonresident licence before sending prescription medicine to an Illinois resident.

Nonresident means the pharmacy is based in another state. Ask for its name and its Illinois licence details, as well as the name of the person prescribing.

If a search result leaves the person or pharmacy unnamed, keep that question open. There is no need to fill in the missing detail yourself.

Ask who holds Illinois permission

Who will assess me, and how can I verify that person’s Illinois licence?
