A guide to finding care · Chicago, Illinois

How do I check the person offering care?

Have a name in front of you? Keep the spelling and licence details together. Start with the public record, then use the visit to ask about the care itself.

The assumption

A polished profile is enough to judge the person offering care.

What the answer rests on

IDFPR is Illinois’s Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. As of September 2026, its free licence search covers doctors, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and pharmacies.

Following an Illinois licence

Find the matching record

For a doctor, the search category is Medical Board. Nurses and physician assistants have their own categories. Enter a name or licence number. The option marked ACTIVE LICENSES ONLY narrows the results to licences that are currently active.

IDFPR issues Illinois doctor licences and takes disciplinary action over misconduct. Discipline means official action over a problem with the person’s professional work. The State Medical Board gives advice.

Compare the record with the name and licence details supplied by the service. If the name does not match, ask for an explanation rather than guessing which person it means.

The short version

Keep the record and the care questions separate

Public record check

Question for the person treating you

Does the licence match this person?

What work do you do that relates to my goal?

What does the current status say?

What other treatment choices will we discuss?

Is there a public discipline record?

Who handles follow-up and questions about the medicine?

Behind the Illinois profile

Read public history with care

On IDFPR’s Enforcement Actions page, open Consolidated Reports: reports that collect summaries of official action over misconduct. A doctor’s public profile also lists training and specialty board certification. That means recognition by a medical board for training and knowledge in a particular area of medicine.

As of September 2026, Illinois physician profiles show certain discipline and malpractice payments from the last 10 years. A profile can be marked as not yet checked by the doctor.

A malpractice payment is money paid to settle or resolve a claim about care. A settlement does not, by itself, establish malpractice.

A clear public discipline record shows no public action in that record. It does not grade that person’s skill.

The useful next question is about your care: how will this person decide whether the proposed medicine fits your needs?

Ask the person behind the record

Can you give me your full name, licence details, and plan for follow-up?
